Rakesh, a 30-year-old government employee, loved shopping online. Like many of us, he scrolled Facebook and Instagram regularly. One day, he saw a catchy ad – “Branded Shoes at Just ₹499 – Limited Offer!”
It sounded like a steal! The website looked very real and trustworthy – “BrandZone.in” – with images of Nike, Adidas, and Reebok products.
Without thinking much, he clicked on the site, selected a pair of shoes, entered his details, and paid ₹499 via UPI. He received an SMS: “Order Confirmed. Your shoes will arrive in 5–7 working days.”
Seven days passed. No delivery.
Rakesh tried calling the customer support number – it was switched off. He emailed – no response. He started getting nervous.
He then searched the brand online and found shocking results – dozens of people had posted complaints about the same website. They had all lost money for fake offers like watches, jackets, or shoes.
Rakesh realized — he was scammed.
He took screenshots of the payment, order confirmation, and Facebook ad. He reported it on India’s cybercrime portal: www.cybercrime.gov.in.
His complaint number was WB/FRAUD/2025/0089, which was officially acknowledged by the portal.
