One Missed Call, One Big Loss – How a Young Man Lost ₹89,000 in Minutes?

Introduction

Rahul (name changed), a 28-year-old tech support executive from Pune, had just returned home after a long day at work. He noticed a missed call from an unknown number starting with “140”. Assuming it was a promotional call, he ignored it.

But five minutes later, he received another call from the same number.

This time, a man speaking in fluent English claimed to be from XYZ Bank's security department. He informed Rahul that his bank account was under risk due to suspicious transactions and they needed to verify his identity to secure the account.

The Fraud Begins

The caller spoke confidently and seemed genuine. He even mentioned Rahul’s partial account number and recent transactions (possibly gathered from phishing or leaked data). The caller warned Rahul that his bank account might be frozen unless he followed the steps immediately.

He then sent Rahul a text message with a link, asking him to verify his phone number by clicking on it.

When Rahul clicked on the link, it opened a page identical to his bank’s login portal. The caller asked him to log in and enter the OTP received.

Rahul did everything as told — believing he was protecting his account.

Within seconds, his phone buzzed again — but this time with UPI debit alerts:

  • ₹25,000
  • ₹30,000
  • ₹34,000

Within 3 minutes, ₹89,000 was gone from his bank account.

The Aftermath

Shocked, Rahul disconnected the call. The number was unreachable now. He immediately contacted his bank and reported the fraud. They froze his account, but the money was already gone.

He then filed a complaint at the nearest cyber crime cell, submitting all the details, including call logs, SMS, and screenshots.

The police traced the number to a VoIP service being operated from a different state using SIM masking, making it difficult to catch the culprits.

Rahul, devastated, shared his story to warn others.

🎓 What Do We Learn from This?

  1. Banks never call and ask for OTPs or login details.
  2. Phone numbers starting with 140 are often used by telemarketers, but fraudsters can spoof them.
  3. Always verify the identity of the caller. If unsure, disconnect the call and call your bank directly.
  4. Never click on links sent via SMS or WhatsApp unless you're 100% sure of the source.
  5. Enable real-time transaction alerts and regularly check your bank statements.

🛡️ How Can You Protect Yourself?
